Members of the Twelfth Dáil - Vivion de Valera

Vivion de Valera (13 December 1910 – 16 February 1982) was an Irish scientist, businessman, lawyer and politician. He was the eldest child of the former Taoiseach and President, Éamon de Valera and Sinéad de Valera and was named after his paternal grandfather, Juan Vivion de Valera. He is also the uncle of former ministers Síle de Valera and Éamon Ó Cuív.

Born in Dublin in 1910, Vivion de Valera was educated at Blackrock College, University College Dublin (MSc, PhD) and King's Inns. While at UCD, he was auditor of the Literary and Historical Society. He was called to the Bar in 1937. After military service during "The Emergency", de Valera retired from the army with the rank of Major. In 1945, he embarked on a political career, being elected as a Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin North–West. He served in Dáil Éireann until 1981. He was a director of the Irish Press Ltd from 1932 until 1982 and managing director from 1951 until 1982.

Vivion de Valera died in Dublin in 1982.

Members of the Twelfth Dáil - Patrick Shanahan

Patrick Shanahan (10 March 1908 – 1 February 2000) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician.

He was elected to the 12th Dáil as a TD for the Clare constituency in the December 1945 by-election to succeed Patrick Burke. He lost his seat in the 1948 general election.

He died in 2000, aged 91.

Members of the Twelfth Dáil - Donal O'Donoghue

Donal J. O'Donoghue (5 June 1894 – 26 July 1971) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician. A teacher by profession, he was first elected as a Fianna Fáil Teachta Dála (TD) at the 1944 by-election for the Kerry South constituency. The by-election was caused by the appointment of Fionán Lynch as a Judge. He was defeated at the 1948 general election.

Members of the Twelfth Dáil - Thomas Brennan

Thomas Brennan (died 22 January 1953) was an Irish Fianna Fáil Party politician who sat for 9 years as a TD for Wicklow.

A building contractor before entering politics, Brennan first stood for election to Dáil Éireann at the 1943 general election, but failed to win a seat. The following year, at the 1944 general election, he unseated his Fianna Fáil colleague Christopher Byrne and took his seat in the 15th Dáil. He was re-elected at the 1948 election and again at the 1951 general election, but died on 22 January 1953.
The by-election for his seat was held on 18 June, and won by the Fine Gael candidate Mark Deering.

At the 1954 general election, his son, Paudge Brennan, regained the seat for Fianna Fáil, beginning a 30-year career in the Oireachtas.

Members of the Twelfth Dáil - Mary Bridget Ryan

Mary Bridget Ryan (née Carey; 31 January 1898 – 8 February 1981) was an Irish Fianna Fáil party politician and Teachta Dála (TD). She was a member of Cumann na mBan and a founder member of Fianna Fáil.

Ryan was first elected to the 12th Dáil in the 1944 general election for the Tipperary constituency. Her husband Martin Ryan was a TD for the same constituency from 1933 until his death in 1943. After boundary changes, she was returned to the 13th Dáil in the 1948 general election for Tipperary North, and re-elected in the 1951, 1954 and 1957 general elections.

At the 1961 general election, she lost her seat to Fine Gael's Thomas Dunne.

Members of the Twelfth Dáil - James Kilroy

James Kilroy (1890 – 5 January 1954) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician and farmer.

In his earlier life, Kilroy was a District Councillor for the Belmullet area and a member of the Belmullet Board of Guardians representing Sinn Fein. He was also Captain of the Ballyglass Compay of the Irish Volunteers and later Adjutant of the 7th Battalion Belmullet and was captured after the burning of the Ballyglass Coast Guard Station in August 1920. He was interred in Galway, and in Portland and Dartmoor until January 1922. He took the Anti-Treaty side in the subsequent Irish Civil War and was a member of the 5th Brigade of the 4th Western Division comprising Erris and Achill and North West Mayo. He was captured near Westport in November 1922 while serving with a Flying Column there and was interred in Harepark camp until 1924.

After his release, he was an active member in Belmullet in the formation of the Fianna Fáil and was elected to Mayo County Council for Belmullet electoral area in 1927. He was elected to Dáil Éireann as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Mayo North constituency at the 1943 general election, and was re-elected at the 1944 and 1948 general elections. He lost his Dáil seat at the 1951 general election but at the subsequent 1951 Seanad Éireann election, he was elected by the Agricultural Panel.

Members of the Twelfth Dáil - Eamonn Coogan

Eamonn Coogan (1896 – 22 January 1948) was an Irish Fine Gael politician, barrister and Deputy Commissioner of the Garda Síochána. He was born in Castlecomer, County Kilkenny. He was elected to Dáil Éireann as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Kilkenny constituency at the 1944 general election. He died during the 1948 general election campaign. His son is the author Tim Pat Coogan.
